TEEN LAW EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2004 allows teenagers
to take Bakersfield Driver’s Education (30 hours of classroom) at age 15, but does not allow them to obtain a driving
permit or drive with their parents. To begin the driving phase(Bakersfield Drivers Training), they must be enrolled with a
professional driving school, be at least 15 ½ years old, and have completed the 30 hour Bakersfield Driver’s
Education course. For the average teenager it will be easier under the new law to simply enroll in a Bakersfield Driver’s
Education class at age 15 ½, complete the 30 hours of training, enroll in behind the wheel instruction(Bakersfield
Drivers Training) (6 hour program), and then they will be able to practice with their parent/guardian between the professional
lessons. Traditionally practicing with a parent or guardian in between the professional driving lessons helps the student
develop those skills such as space management, vision habits, and other driving techniques. The parent or guardian can then
go on and give the student a minimum of 40 hours of day time driving practice(Bakersfield Drivers Training), along with a
minimum of 10 hours of night time practice.
